Multiple APK support for Android Market

If you’ve heard of the mobile OS Android (which you should have), you will know that there are many different versions by many different manufacturers, running different versions of the OS itself. And with that great power comes great turmoil when it comes to developers releasing apps for the phones. Some apps that may work brilliantly on one Android phone could entirely crash another.

Well now Google has now allowed multiple APK support for the Android Market. What this means is, depending on your Android device, upon  entering the Market and hitting ‘download’, the app version most compatible with your device will automatically be pushed to you. This is all done in the background. You may not even notice a difference in behaviour from the current Market. Of course it is down to the individual developers of the apps to make different .apks available for the Android OSes and/or handsets available.

This will come in especially handy for developers wanting to release tablet specific and mobile specific apps. This saves them the trouble of having to setup 2 different entries for the app in the Market. The Market can tell the difference in device and push the right one to the phone/tablet.
