The team of Activision, Infinity Ward and this time, Sledgehammer Games have done it again. It took Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 just 24 hours to set records for biggest gaming launch, ever. 6.5 million copies of the game were sold within 24 hours, making $400 million (£250 million) in sales.

This news follows a pattern as Call of Duty releases have broken sales records 3 years in a row. Starting with Modern Warfare 2 setting the mark in 2009, selling 4.7 million copies in 24 hours and Black Ops selling 5.6 million copies in the same time frame.

These figures only take into account US and UK sales. It will be interesting to see the final figures once sales from all regions are tallied.

And in case you were wondering, Modern Warfare 3′s record breaking launch beats that of the other game (Battlefield 3).

Multiplayer gameplay trailer for Modern Warfare 3

The leaked photo above shows what will be the Hardened Edition of the upcoming Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3. The game is set for release on November 8th for Xbox 360, Playsation 3, PC, Wii and DS. From the image, it seems this Hardened Edition is aimed for the European audience but previous Limited Edition packages for Europe and US have been similar.

The Hardened Edition includes:

• Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 game with unique disc art.
• One year of membership in Call of Duty Elite.
• “Founder status” on Elite with exclusive in-game emblem, player card, camouflage, clan XP boost and other exclusive benefits.
• SteelBook case.
• PlayStation Network exclusive: “Animated Timeline Theme.”
• Xbox 360 exclusive: “Special Ops Juggernaut Xbox Live Outfit.”
• Limited-edition “field journal” with more than 100 pages of “authentic military sketches, diagrams and written entries.”

It seems Activision has had the last straw and have filed a domain name dispute (noticed by the people at fusible.com) against Moderwarfare3.com which redirects to Electronic Arts’ Battlefield 3 site.

Modernwarfare3.com is not owned by Activision or EA, but what seems to be a/some die-hard Battlefield fan(s).

Activision states in the complaint:

“It appears that the Respondent supports the game Battlefield from the game developer Electronic Arts (“EA”).  EA is one of Complainant’s principal competitors in the video game industry, and Battlefield game competes in the marketplace with Complainant’s MODERN WARFARE games and its other military-themed shooter games in the CALL OF DUTY series.”

It would seem that some troublemaking Battlefield fans have gotten their hands on the domain www.modernwarfare3.com and redirected all its traffic to battlefield.com/battlefield3. A Google cache of the site reveals what used to be on the page, and it shows a Modern Warfare 3 hate vid along with some text beneath the embedded YouTube video.

It has to be made clear that EA is NOT behind all of this.
