Although the iPhone 4 sold out pretty much everywhere yesterday, I managed to get my hands on this new piece of hardware for an honest and opinion based review for your reading pleasure.

HARDWARE

Being the owner of the HTC HD2 with its huge 4.3″ screen and the iPod Touch 2G with its 3.5″ screen, every time I handled my iPod Touch after using my HD2, it felt like I had a lot of free space in my hand which I didn’t like the feel off. I was expecting the same feeling with the iPhone 4 which has the same screen size. I was however pleasantly disappointed. It felt very nice to the touch and very durable (although proven otherwise by iFixYourI).

SOFTWARE

What can I say about the iOS 4 that hasn’t already been said? It looks good, is very smooth, responsive and packed full of features. It has to be said, regardless of how much you may dislike Apple, they do know how to make things we’re already used to look, a lot better.

FEATURES

Front facing VGA camera with ‘FaceTime’ video calling, which only works from one iPhone 4 to another over Wi-Fi only. This may be temporary but there is no concrete evidence to prove otherwise.

5 mega-pixel rear camera capable of recording 720p HD videos which take up a ton of space. A 42 second video I recorded took up 50MB of space. But I suppose that is to be expected from a HD recording.

1GHz A4 processor (the same processor found in the iPad).

Apple’s version of multitasking.

FINAL THOUGHTS

The most obvious is its price: 16GB is £499 and 32G is £599 on pay-as-you-go and around £180 on the cheapest contract deals.

Multitasking isn’t actually multitasking. It’s Apple’s strip down version which is very limited. This is understandable as enabling “full” multitasking would drain battery life if used abusively.

The 720p recording takes up too much memory especially if an iPhone 4 owner has a lot of music on the device. (17gigs worth in my case)

The famed loss of reception, which can lead to dropped calls when holding the bottom left part of the phone (see proof in the post image)

Although the iPhone has two speakers at the bottom of the device, only the right one is used for music playback. Very weird.

There is a lot more to say about the iPhone 4 but I’ve tried my best to cover the most important parts. The iPhone 4 is a very good product but I do have a few issues with it.

In my honest opinion I think there are a lot more reasonable devices for my use (and I use my phone intensively) in other HTC Devices. Either way, there are a few more snapshots of this new device for you to ogle at below.

Firstly it needs to be stated that my iPod Touch 2G does not have all the features that come with the iOS4 (wallpapers, multitasking, etc) as stated by Apple.

Now, the most noticeable thing about this update is the speed and smoothness. It has a few new visual tweaks that make the new OS more aesthetically pleasing. Nothing much more to be said there.

The next thing to be mentioned is the folders (an example is the image to the left). You simply drag one app onto the other that you both want in a folder, the name for the folder is decided automatically by the genre of apps and it’s as simple as that. The folders can however only hold up to 12 apps. Changing the name of a folder is easy as holding down the apps till they shake, tap on the folder and you’ll see something similar to this, tap on the name box and change the name of the folder to anything of your choice.

Also, if you have a app in the folder that supports push notifications, when you do get a notification you get get a number icon on the top right of the folder (example) like you would for the mail app, showing how many notifications you have in one of the apps in the folder.

I believe that is all that is worth mentioning. As you most likely gathered from the title. I will be jailbreaking this device to see what possibility it holds. Supposedly the jailbreak unlocks the features that apple didn’t allow for the “slower” devices (wallpapers, multitasking, etc) automatically after the jailbreak. Stay tuned for an update of how that goes.

I just literally updated my iPod touch 2G to have the latest firmware iOS4 which is due to be released tomorrow (21st June). I will put it through some intensive tests after synchronizing all my files for the first time on the new firmware. I will post updates of what new features I find. Seeing as I do not own the iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 3G, I do not expect to have all the features that the new firmware can offer.

Let’s get cracking.

News just in that the latest upcoming OS from Apple (iOS 4), which was just recently released for the developers will work on any iPod Touch or iPhone. There are however a few catches.

This installation of the OS will only be installed providing the user has iTunes 9.2 which isn’t out yet for the general public.

Even if you were/are a developer this latest iTunes is only available to mac developers, seeing as there isn’t an iPhone SDK for Windows Operating System anyway.
